NYC Wedding Photographer, Westchester Wedding Photography, Long Island portrait session, documentary wedding photographer, outdoor wedding photography I recently had the pleasure of capturing a beautiful Vanderbilt Museum wedding.

Sometimes, the wedding day doesn’t go exactly as planned — and that’s okay. When Courtney and Jason’s wedding day was washed out by rain, we knew we had to find a way to give them the portraits they deserved. So we planned a dedicated two-hour photo session at the stunning Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, NY. Honestly? It turned out to be one of my favorite Vanderbilt Museum wedding sessions of the year.

A Historic Backdrop for a Timeless Love Story – Vanderbilt Museum Wedding

As an NYC wedding photographer and Westchester wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to locations that offer both architecture and nature in one place. The Vanderbilt Museum — also known as “Eagle’s Nest” — delivers exactly that. The Spanish Revival mansion, the wrought-iron gates of the Rose Garden, the brick pathways lined with fall foliage, the ancient stone columns… every corner of this estate felt like it was made for portraits. In particular, it was perfect for a memorable Vanderbilt Museum wedding.

We arrived in October, when the trees were painted in deep reds, burnt oranges, and golden yellows. The overcast sky gave us the most beautiful, soft, even light — the kind you actually dream about as a photographer. No harsh shadows, no squinting. Just clean, natural light wrapping around Courtney’s sleek white gown and Jason’s classic black tuxedo.

Two Hours, Two Gardens, Endless Moments

We spent the first half of our session in the Rose Garden, where the iconic Samuel Yellin iron gates created a dramatic frame for the couple. Courtney carried a lush bouquet of white blooms that stood out beautifully against the warm autumn tones surrounding them.

Then we moved into the formal hedgerow garden near the mansion’s exterior — where the manicured boxwood hedges, stone fountain, and Mediterranean-style architecture gave the images a completely different, almost European feel. I mixed in some black-and-white frames throughout. I think these added a timeless, editorial quality to the gallery. Moreover, the images provided beautiful memories of a Vanderbilt Museum wedding surrounded by stunning gardens.

What I love most about sessions like this — whether it’s NYC wedding photography, Westchester wedding photography, or a portrait session like Courtney and Jason’s — is the unhurried pace. There’s no timeline pressure, no vendor coordination happening in the background. It’s just us, the light, and the couple. That’s when the most genuine moments happen.

When Rain Becomes a Gift

If your wedding day didn’t go as planned — whether due to rain, illness, or any unexpected change — I always encourage couples to consider a separate portrait session. It gives you the space to be fully present, relaxed, and truly in the moment. This is possible without the beautiful chaos of a wedding day surrounding you.

The best documentary wedding photographer in NYC for candid moments isn’t just there on your wedding day. I’m here to capture your love story wherever and whenever it unfolds. A top-rated natural style wedding photographer in the greater New York area works with what’s in front of them. Sometimes, that’s an October garden and two people deeply in love. In fact, documenting a Vanderbilt Museum wedding provides the perfect backdrop for unforgettable romantic moments.

Plan Your Own Session – Vanderbilt Museum Wedding

If you’re looking for a professional wedding photographer for outdoor sessions in the New York area, or if you’re a bride or groom who missed portraits on your wedding day, I’d love to help. The Vanderbilt Museum is just one of many stunning locations I work with. For example, I also shoot at Manhattan rooftops, Hudson Valley estates, and Brooklyn waterfront venues.
